  1. How to use INSTAGRAM DM on a Mac computer You can DM or direct message with an easy to use the app for Mac right from your computers. It's called Flume and h.
  2. Download Instagram and enjoy it on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. ‎Bringing you closer to the people and things you love. — Instagram from Facebook Connect with friends, share what you’re up to, or see what's new from others all over the world.

Have you ever wanted to continue a conversation on Instagram Direct Messages but found it frustrating to pick up and unlock your phone every time? Had people sliding into your DMs when you’re supposed to be ‘focused’ on work?

Mac

It’s unfortunate that, as of today, Instagram has no official app for Mac. Yeah, you could use the website through your browser but what’s the fun in scrolling through and liking posts without messaging people? For whatever reason, Windows has a native app of its own while Mac doesn’t. That said, there are a few third-party apps that exist, although I’ve steered away from those because I’d rather not give them access to my password, posts, usage activity, messages, and the like (pun intended).

I’ve written this tutorial to show how anyone on a Mac can set up Instagram DM in 60 seconds (if you’re good at following instructions), without worrying about your data or spending money.

Requirements: Mac, internet connection.

Launch Automator

Do this by searching for ‘Automator’ on Spotlight Search (quick launch by holding command + space). You could also look for it in your applications - it’s an icon of a robot holding a black pipe, normally in the default ‘Other’ folder inside the ‘Applications’ folder.

Create a new document

Click File > New and in the dialog box that appears, choose ‘Application’ as the document type.

Add the “Get Specified URLs” action

Search or scroll till you find the “Get Specified URLs” action. You can then double-click this option or drag it onto the pane on the right.

Select the address (http://www.apple.com) that was pre-filled in the address box and remove it. Now, add Instagram’s address (make sure to add http://www at the beginning):

Add the “Website Pop-up” action

As done before, find the “Website Pop-up” action and add it.

Choose from the options for ‘Site Size’. I prefer the ‘iPhone’ option as it creates a small, iPhone screen-sized application window that can be dragged around, but you can also choose alternate sizes.

For ‘User Agent’, choose the ‘iPhone’ option. This is important - if you choose any other option, you will not be able to use DM.

Save your application

Press command + S or click File > Save. Name your application ‘Instagram’, and save it to your ‘Applications’ folder. That’s all! Open your app from your Applications folder. You’ll be taken to the login/signup screen; once you’re logged in, you should see something like this:

Voila! You can now continue your DM conversations right from your Mac!

NOTE: You will stay signed in to your account, so the next time you open the app, you won’t need to sign in all over again.

Bonus: Customize the app icon for your newly created Instagram app on your Mac!

This is super easy:

  1. Find and download an Instagram logo (.pngs with transparent backgrounds work best)
  2. Open the logo in Preview and hit command + A followed by command + C
  3. Open your Applications folder and select ‘Instagram’. Hit command + I to get app info
  4. Click the small robot icon on the top left corner. Hit command + V

Boom. You now have an official-looking Instagram app that can handle DMs on your Mac.

PS: For those of you wondering how I have Google Calendar and Keep apps on my Mac, I used Automater to make them ;)

I was surprised this solution didn’t exist already, so I did some digging. I found that Instagram only recently (mid-May) enabled DM on mobile browsers, which is exactly the trick this solution uses. It also looks like you’ll soon be able to access Instagram for web on all devices. Yes, that would make this trick a little redundant, but I’ve found that being able to launch a mobile-sized application in one click is easier than using Instagram in my browser anyway.

I hope this was useful! Feel free to reach out with any comments or questions here, I’m happy to help with issues or concerns you may have.

A huge shoutout to Leela Jay for helping me edit this article. Please do share this with friends who own a Mac and would find this trick useful. Watch this space for more blog posts!

Not only is Instagram the top photo-sharing site out there, but it’s quickly becoming one of the best ways to film and share videos. There are all kinds of ways to share videos on Instagram — Stories, Instagram Live, IGTV — and Instagram has some great tools for making your video stand out.

But what happens when you want to save Instagram videos to the Camera Roll on your iPhone? Is this even possible? The short answer is yes, although it does require a bit of extra effort. Here’s an overview of different ways to save Instagram videos, including how to save videos from an Instagram story or an Instagram DM.

Can you save a video from Instagram?

While there are dozens of apps that allow you to save Insta videos to your phone, they can be sketchy at best, and none of them are recommended or endorsed by Instagram itself.

When you record a video using the Instagram app, the video file is stored on the platform. Instagram would like to keep it that way, but fortunately, there are some workarounds that enable you to save your Instagram videos to your Camera Roll.

Before you download any Insta videos

  1. Get the owner's permission. If you’re planning on downloading videos that belong to another Instagram user, be sure to ask their permission before proceeding. Under Instagram’s Terms of Use and Community Guidelines, you can only post content to Instagram if it doesn’t violate the intellectual property rights of another party. The best way to ensure that you are not violating copyright laws is to only download and share content that you’ve created yourself.
  2. Make room for the videos on your iPhone. As you know, videos take a lot of space, and if you want to download some to your iPhone, you want to have space for them. A smart way to do that is to run a photo cleanup with an app like Gemini Photos. It helps you find and delete similar photos, old screenshots, blurred pics, and other clutter that's wasting storage.

How to save Instagram videos to your phone via your Mac

One workaround to download an Instagram video is to save the video to your computer using the web-based version of Instagram and then share it to your iPhone via iCloud, AirDrop, or email. Here’s how to get videos from Instagram onto your Mac:

  1. Open Instagram in the browser browser and head over to the video you want to save.
  2. Click on the video. Once the video opens, right click on the screen, but not on the actual video.
  3. A context menu will appear. Depending on the browser you’re using, click either View Page Source or Inspect Element. This should open a new tab with the source code for the page you are looking at.
  4. Click Command+F to open your browser’s search field.
  5. A text box will appear. Type in “mp4.”
  6. This should give you a few highlighted results, and the first highlighted mp4 will be part of a larger URL.
  7. Copy the entire URL and paste it into the address bar of a new tab in your browser.
  8. You should see a standalone video.
  9. Click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the video and click Download.
  10. Change the file name to whatever you want and save your video to your Mac.

Now that you’ve got your video downloaded, you can share it to your iPhone via AirDrop:

Instagram Dm App Mac
  1. Right-click on the video file on your Mac.
  2. Go to Share > AirDrop.
  3. If you don’t have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth turned on, you’ll be prompted to turn them on. Your iPhone also needs to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
  4. All AirDrop users within your Mac’s Bluetooth range will appear on your screen.
  5. Click on your iPhone to send the video.
  6. On your iPhone, you’ll see a pop-up asking if you want to accept the file. Tap Accept.
  7. Back on your Mac, click Done.

That’s it, your video will transfer to your phone.

How to save an Instagram story

Saving an Instagram story is a little bit different than saving a video from an Instagram gallery, and fortunately, it’s not quite as complex. If you’re saving your own Insta stories to your Camera Roll, here’s how it works.

  1. Tap on one of your stories and then tap More in the lower-right corner of your screen.
  2. Tap Save, and then Save Video.

The setting might not be on by default. In that case, after step 1 you’ll do the following:

  1. Scroll down to Saving, and where it says Save to Camera Roll, swipe the button into the on position.
  2. Go back to your story, tap on the three dots again, and when you tap Save, you’ll be able to save your individual video or your whole story to your Camera Roll.

Want to save someone else’s Instagram story (with permission, of course)? If you have an iPhone, the easiest way to do this is to record your iPhone's screen with the built-in recorder. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Head to your iPhone’s Settings, tap Control Center, and then Customize Controls.
  2. Scroll down to Screen Recording and tap the plus sign.
  3. Your screen recorder has now been added to your Control Center, along with your flashlight, music, and camera app.
  4. When you’re ready to record a story, simply swipe up and press the record button.
  5. Press the button again when you want to stop recording. The entire screen, including the Instagram story with sound, will be recorded and saved to your Camera Roll.

How to copy a video from Instagram DM

Instagram Dm App Mac

Recording a direct-message video on Instagram works exactly the same way as recording someone’s Instagram story. Simply use your iPhone’s screen recorder to record the Instagram video. It will automatically be saved to your Camera Roll for future viewing.

Saving videos within the Instagram app is super easy, but as you can see, downloading those same videos to your Camera Roll requires a bit more work. While the workarounds mentioned above aren’t effortless, they allow you to avoid dubious third-party apps while downloading your favorite Instagram videos to your Camera Roll.
