Logitech has released a torrent of products this week, and the deluge shows little sign of stopping. Today’s introduction is different, however, as it doesn’t have anything to do with the upcoming Windows 8 launch.

With an integrated battery and Wi-Fi radio, the Logitech Broadcaster lets users record their video from wherever they want, as long as there’s Wi-Fi present. Targeted at “video professionals, bloggers and hobbyists”, the webcam supports some pretty advanced features. The most impressive Broadcaster feature is the webcam’s ability to stream directly to Ustream without having to go through a computer intermediary.

Mac

That last bit is an important consideration, since many users who’d wish to broadcast away from their desk aren’t going to want to have to constantly monitor their Mac’s connection. You can, however, keep an eye on the stream and control the flow of information using Logitech’s iOS app for iPhones and iPads.

In addition to direct streaming and uploading, the Logitech Broadcaster supports dynamic switching. You can start out using the webcam built into your computer’s display, then switch, live, to the Logitech Broadcaster just by hitting a button. You can switch back, too. Users who record tutorial videos and place them online would likely find use in the the switching ability – you can record your introduction with the built-in camera, then switch to the Broadcaster when you’re record to cook, hack, or play, and switch back as needed for commentary.

The previously mentioned Logitech iOS app can also record video straight from the Broadcaster. That might come in handy if you need to record video from an odd or oblique angle – fire up the app on your iPhone or iPad, and hold the Broadcaster far above your head, say, or in the crook of a tree – all while keeping an eye on things from your device.

If you noticed an Apple-centric flavor here, you’re not alone. The new Logitech Broadcaster is targeted at the Mac segment of the market, and at launch will only be compatible with devices running OS X, or iPhones and iPads running iOS.

So far, Logitech has announced that the Broadcaster is explicitly supported by QuickTime, Photo Booth, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, FaceTime, iChat and Skype, though any software that can take advantage of a typical Wi-Fi connection can probably work just fine.

While the iOS app can record video and manage uStream brodcasts, no other app on the device can access the camera’s functionality.

With a case that serves as a built-in stand, the Logitech Broadcaster should hit stores this month, with a suggested retail price of $199.99. It’s pricey, but for the moment, offers features that can’t be matched by anything else.
