Can I use Microsoft Remote Desktop to control a Mac? Unfortunately not. This software allows Windows computers to be accessed and controlled from external devices (including Macs), but does not work the other way.

How to control a Mac from your PC using Chrome Remote Desktop

Using the Google tool is the only free method currently available (which we were able to find) as all other tools and methods involve signing up for a subscription service.

To use Chrome Remote Desktop, the first thing you need to do is install the application (and the Chrome web browser) on both your Mac and PC, if it’s not there. So, navigate to the Chrome Remote Desktop website, then on the Mac, select the Remote Access option in the top right corner.

Then on the next page you will see the “Set up remote access” box, which has a blue circle with a downward pointing arrow. Click on it to download the application.

Most likely, another window with the Chrome webshop will open. So click on Add to Chrome> Add Extension and the application should download. Then click the Accept & Install button to download the application.

A window should appear with the Chrome Remote Desktop Host.pkg file. Double click on it and follow the installation instructions to complete the process.

After the installation is complete, you will now be asked to choose a name for your Mac. The name is automatically assigned by the application, but you can change it if you want. Whichever you choose, make a note of the name before clicking Next to continue. You then need to set a 6-digit PIN code that your Windows PC uses to access the device. Confirm this and then click on Start.

A pop-up will appear with a message informing you that the accessibility settings need to be turned on in order to allow remote access to your Mac.

Click the Open Accessibility Settings button, click the lock icon, and enter your system password to make changes. Then select the check box for ChromeRemoteDekstopHost and click the lock icon again.

Go back to the pop-up informing you about the accessibility settings and click Next, followed by OK and your Mac.

There are a few more steps left, the first of which is to create an access code that you can use to connect. So on the Chrome Remote Desktop page, select the Remote Assistance option at the top of the page and click Generate Code in the Get Assistance box.

Another pop-up window will appear informing you that the accessibility settings need to be changed. So follow the instructions, then click the “Generate Code” button again and make a note of the code displayed.

Now to the PC.

Setting it up on the PC is a very similar affair. Visit the Chrome Remote Desktop website in Chrome and click the Remote Assistance option in the top right corner.

You will be prompted to install the Chrome Remote Desktop application. So click on “Install” and follow the instructions. When that is all sorted, go back to the Chrome Remote Desktop page and enter the passcode you created on the Mac in the Offer Assistance box, then click Connect.

Your Mac will ask if you want to allow access. So click share and you will be connected. The Windows side can now operate your Mac, although the controls can be a bit rudimentary.

You will notice a small blue semicircle on the right side of the Windows display. Clicking on it will bring up a menu with various options for how you want the app to behave. Just make sure to use the full screen option to make it easier to switch between apps and access the dock.

When you’re done, click the “Stop Sharing” option below and everything will work as normal again.
